Supporting Someone With Cancer: Listen, Ask and Help Practically

How friends and family can offer respectful practical and emotional support to someone living with cancer.

Supporting Someone With Cancer: Listen, Ask and Help Practically

Ask rather than assume

Different people want different levels of conversation, help and privacy.

Offer something specific

A ride, meal or help with an errand may be easier to accept than an open-ended offer.

Avoid forcing optimism

People should be able to talk about fear or frustration without having those feelings immediately corrected.

Respect medical boundaries

Do not pressure someone to try treatments, diets or supplements based on anecdotes.

Stay present over time

Support often drops off after the first weeks even though needs may continue much longer.
